Zikra is a local-first spaced-repetition flashcard app. It works without an account, and your study data stays on your device. This policy explains exactly what does and does not happen with your data.

Summary

• No account required. Your decks, cards, images, and study history are stored only on your device.
• Free accounts see one child-safe ad only after completing a study session. Ads never appear while you are studying cards, and Premium removes ads entirely.
• Optional AI features send the text (and any photos) you choose to turn into flashcards to an AI provider so it can generate cards. If you don't use AI, none of your card content leaves your device.

Data stored on your device

Decks, notes, cards, any images you add, your review/study history, streaks, and app settings are stored locally on your device only. We cannot see this data. Uninstalling the app removes it.

AI features (optional)

Zikra offers optional AI-assisted card creation. You choose whether to use it, and there are two modes:

• Zikra AI (managed): the topic or text you enter — and any photos you attach for a “scan to cards” — are sent over an encrypted connection to Zikra's processing service and then to our AI provider (OpenAI) to generate the cards. These requests are associated only with a random identifier generated on your device for usage/quota limits; they are not linked to your name, email, or any account. Content you send is used only to fulfill your request. It is not used to train AI models and is not sold.
• Your own key: if you enter your own OpenAI API key, requests go directly from your device to OpenAI under your key and OpenAI's terms. Your key is stored encrypted on your device and is sent only to OpenAI.

If you never use AI features, no card content is transmitted off your device.

Subscriptions (Zikra Premium)

Zikra Premium is an optional subscription sold and processed by Google Play. We do not receive or store your payment details. To confirm an active subscription, Google Play provides a purchase token, which we verify against Google's servers. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in the Google Play Store.

Advertising (free version only)

The free version uses Google AdMob to show a single interstitial ad at the natural pause after a completed study session. No ad is shown while a card is on screen, when there is nothing to study, or to a user whose Premium entitlement is active. Premium users do not initialize or request ads.

Because Zikra's Play audience includes children, every ad request is configured as child-directed and under the age of consent, and the maximum ad content rating is set to G. These ads are not personalized using behavioral profiles.

For ad delivery, measurement, analytics, and fraud prevention, the Google Mobile Ads SDK may automatically collect and share a general location inferred from the device's IP address, app and ad interactions (such as app launches, taps, and video views), diagnostic information (such as performance and crash-related data), and device or app identifiers. This information is encrypted in transit. Google provides controls for limited ads and advertising identifiers in Android settings.

Text-to-speech and reminders

• Optional read-aloud uses your device's built-in text-to-speech; text is processed by your device/operating system.
• Study reminders are scheduled locally on your device.

Permissions

• INTERNET — for optional AI features, subscription verification, and ads in the free version.
• com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID — included by the Google Mobile Ads SDK for ad delivery and measurement; Android lets users reset or delete the advertising ID.
• POST_NOTIFICATIONS — only for optional study reminders.
• com.android.vending.BILLING — only for the optional Premium subscription.

Data we do NOT collect

We do not require accounts or collect contacts, precise location, or the contents of your locally stored decks and study history. We do not sell personal data.

Third-party services

• OpenAI — generates AI flashcards (managed and own-key modes).
• Google Play — processes payments and subscriptions.
• Google AdMob — serves child-directed, G-rated ads to free users after completed study sessions.
• Cloudflare — provides the processing infrastructure for the managed Zikra AI service.

Each has its own privacy policy governing its handling of data.

Children

Zikra is a general-audience study tool that may be used by children. We configure all AdMob requests for child-directed and under-age-of-consent treatment with a G content rating. We do not knowingly collect children's card content or personal information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
